Kun McDonald´s-pikaruokaketju saapui Tšekkiin 22 vuotta sitten, siitä tuli heti valtavan suosittu. Viimeisinä vuosina liiketoiminta on kuitenkin hidastunut ja liikevoitto polkenut paikoillaan. Nyt yhtiö on ilmoittanut tekevänsä Tšekissä uudenlaisia, toimintaa elvyttäviä suunnitelmia. Uusi strategia on kolmivuotinen ja siinä kaavaillaan lisää franchising-liikeyrittäjiä maahan. Asiakkaat voisivat koota oman burgerinsa makunsa mukaisesti ja muutenkin listaa mukautetaan enemmän tšekkiläisten makua ajatellen; tulossa on esimerkiksi jonkinlaista "sandwich"-ajatusta. Myös juoma- ja jälkiruokavalikoimiin tulee muutoksia. (Praha Radio)

When the McDonald fast food chain arrived in the Czech Republic twenty-two years ago it was a huge hit, but in recent years business has been slowing down and profits have been stagnating. The company’s Czech division has now announced major revitalization plans. The three-year strategy envisages more franchising and changes in the menu. Clients will be able to put together their own burger to suit their taste and in general the company wants to cater more to Czech tastes introducing the popular Czech open-faced sandwich in some form, and there will be changes to the drinks and desserts menu and plans are also afoot to increase the comfort level for families. Torstaina 18. joulukuuta vietettiin kolmatta vuosipäivää entisen presidentti Václav Havelin kuolemasta. Erilaisia tapahtumia järjestettiin ympäri maata, mutta jotkut kriitikot huomauttivat, että kolme vuotta Havelin lähdön jälkeen maa on eksynyt kauas tämän filosofiasta ja ihanteista. On Thursday, December 18th, Czechs are marking the third anniversary of the death of Vaclav Havel, the legend of the Velvet Revolution and the country’s first post-communist president. Commemorative events are taking place in different parts of the country, but some critics point out that three years after his departure, the Czech Republic has strayed far from Vaclav Havel’s philosophy and ideals. As a respected playwright and dissident, Vaclav Havel easily established new relations with the outer world, gaining the country international respect and establishing it as a moral authority ever-ready to defend human rights in other parts of the world. 56-vuotias tšekkiläinen mies on kuollut 18. joulukuuta sen jälkeen kun hän teki niin sanotusti "Jan Palachit" eli sytytti itsensä tuleen Venceslauksen aukiolla (Václavské náměstí) Prahan keskustassa tiistaina 16.12.2014. Mies, jonka henkilöllisyyttä ei ole kerrottu julkisuuteen, oli lomalla psykiatrisesta sairaalasta Prahassa, poliisin tiedottaja Tomas Hulan kertoo. Mies sytytti itsensä tuleen hieman ennen puoltayötä. Vuonna 1969 kaksi opiskelijaa, Jan Palach ja Jan Zajíc, kuolivat samaisella paikalla valelemalla itsensä bensiinillä ja polttaen itsensä. A man who set himself on fire in central Prague on Tuesday night has died of his injuries, a spokesman for the Vinohrady hospital in the capital said. The man, who was 56, doused himself in a flammable liquid and set himself alight at the top of Wenceslas Square shortly before midnight. Passers-by attempted to put out the flames with jackets before a fire extinguisher was found. He was taken to hospital with severe burns where he died on Wednesday night. A spokesperson for the police said the man had been on day-release from a Prague 8 mental hospital but had not returned in the evening. (Praha Radio)
